All right. Welcome back to the course. In this video, we’re gonna delve a little bit more deeply into why understanding neurodiversity is so important. And we’re gonna do that pretty quickly at the same time.

Understanding neurodiversity is important because it allows us to appreciate and value the differences in how different people process information. When talking to somebody, it’s important to understand not just the words they’re saying, but also where they’re coming from. Beyond that, neurodivergent people approach the world in a totally different way. Understanding the fundamentals here helps us recognize that there isn’t a right or normal way of thinking, and that everyone has unique strengths and challenges.

In fact, some of the most famous people in history were neurodiverse, such as Albert Einstein, Vincent Van Gogh, and Emily Dickinson. And there are hundreds more with neurodiversity. We’re not just talking about a different way of seeing things, but an entirely different way to assemble the mechanism of seeing.

It would be like Galileo seeing a photograph, a camera, a photography machine, which is what a camera is, when all he was familiar with was a telescope and that lens that you pull out. It would be a completely foreign thing, even though he has a seeing mechanism and can see what’s on the other side. And even though what he sees is still stuff that’s over there, the machine would be different, it operates differently.

To this end, it’s critical to recognize that the most common misunderstanding when it comes to relating to neurodiverse people is the assumption that their mechanism of interpreting and understanding the aspects of a situation, a concept, or even the language that you’re using is completely different. What fires and what order and how things come together in their mind is completely different, even though you both are using words and they represent a bigger picture and they represent a bigger idea and they’re put together in a way that we’re supposed to all agree on.

Supporting neurodivergent people really starts with understanding specifically how they’re different. It starts with recognizing and accepting these differences so we can better support those who have neurodivergence. And if you’re a neurodivergent person, you can better explain what’s going on to somebody else.

We will also be able to help neurodivergent individuals understand information better because we can speak their language in a sense. In the next modules, we’re gonna provide specific examples to see how to create inclusive environments, how to create inclusive language, and how to support neurodivergent individuals in a variety of settings. First, we have to get into the differences. So let’s dive in.

In this video, we’ll dive deeper into the concept of neurodiversity and explore why it matters. We’ll talk about how neurodiversity challenges the traditional view of what is “normal” and “acceptable” in terms of human behavior and cognition. We’ll discuss the strengths and challenges of different neurotypes and how they contribute to society in unique ways. We’ll also touch on the social and historical context that has led to the pathologization of neurodivergent individuals and the need for a more inclusive and accepting world. By the end of this video, you’ll have a better understanding of why neurodiversity is such an important concept and how embracing it can benefit us all.
